Synopsis

"Beyond the Boundary" (Kyokai no Kanata) is a TV anime produced by Kyoto Animation, broadcast in 2013. Set against a townscape evocative of Nara, it follows the Spirit World Warriors who hunt otherworldly beings called "youmu," and the young people drawn into their world. Akihito, a boy fond of glasses, meets Mirai Kuriyama, a Spirit World Warrior able to wield her own blood as a weapon. As they confront their loneliness and inner struggles, the two grow closer. Blending school-life scenes, battle action, and delicate emotion, it is a dreamlike coming-of-age fantasy.

Why visit the real-life locations

The ancient capital of Nara is a pilgrimage setting where you can walk the world of Beyond the Boundary. From Kintetsu-Nara Station, stroll through deer-filled Nara Park, Kofuku-ji Temple, and around Sarusawa Pond to find the show's calm townscape before you. The atmospheric alleys of Naramachi and the view of the city from Todai-ji's Nigatsu-do capture the story's mood. Spend a quiet moment by the water at Ukimido, then gaze over the Nara Basin from Mount Wakakusa. Trace the characters' steps through a townscape woven from historic temples and nature.
