Synopsis
A 2019 feature-length anime film directed by Makoto Shinkai and produced by CoMix Wave Films. Set in a Tokyo drenched by endless rain, the story follows a boy who has run away from a remote island to the big city. There he meets a mysterious girl able to clear the sky, even briefly, simply by praying. As they use this power to alter the weather, the two are drawn toward a difficult choice between the wishes of the world and their own. With lush art and music, the film paints the light, rain, and restless emotions of youth in the city.
Why visit the real-life locations
Every location is in Tokyo, so this is a pilgrimage through the rainy city. Wander the streets around the former Yoyogi Kaikan site in Shinjuku, Kabukicho, the JR Shinjuku Station south exit, the Tabata Station north exit, and Nozoki-zaka (Fujimi-zaka). To pray for clear skies, visit the Weather Shrine (Koenji Hikawa Shrine) or Asahi Inari Shrine in Ginza. For wide views of the sky, head to the Sunshine 60 Observatory in Ikebukuro, the Roppongi Hills observation deck, Odaiba Kaihin Park, or Shiba Park. Walk the heart of the city chasing the light after the rain.
