Koyomi Araragi encounters supernatural oddities. Known for unique visuals and dialogue.

Synopsis

The "Monogatari Series" is a group of TV anime produced by Shaft, beginning with "Bakemonogatari" broadcast in 2009, based on the novels by NisiOisiN. It unfolds in an unnamed, fictional town. After a high school boy encounters a mysterious girl who seems to have almost no weight, he becomes entangled with various young people caught up in strange "oddities" (kaii). Marked by dialogue-driven storytelling and bold, stylized visuals, the series likens the anxieties and shadows of adolescence to supernatural phenomena, making for an eccentric and richly layered narrative.

Why visit the real-life locations

The Monogatari Series is set in a fictional town and is not pinned to any single real location. Even so, scenes throughout are said to draw on views reminiscent of real places. The wide, open landscapes of Hokkaido are cherished as a destination for travelers seeking expansive scenery, while Suginami Ward around the headquarters of Shaft, the studio behind the series, is known as an area associated with the show. Strolling the area around the south exit of Shinjuku Station lets you enjoy real cityscapes while recalling the series' distinctive atmosphere.
