Summer Time Rendering
サマータイムレンダ
A time-loop suspense on a remote island. Tomogashima, Wakayama is the model.
Synopsis
"Summer Time Rendering" is a TV anime adapted by OLM from Yasuki Tanaka's original manga, broadcast in 2022. It is set on "Hitogashima," an island modeled on Tomogashima in Wakayama. Shinpei Ajiro, the protagonist who lost his parents and now lives in Tokyo, returns to his home island after learning that his childhood friend Ushio has died in a drowning accident. But there are suspicious details around Ushio's death, tied to the existence of "Shadows"—beings that take on the exact appearance of others. Gaining the power to return from death, Shinpei confronts the mystery lurking on the island in this sci-fi suspense.
Why visit the real-life locations
The pilgrimage sites of this series are concentrated in the Kada area of Wakayama City and on Tomogashima. Tomogashima, the model for Hitogashima, is an uninhabited island reached by ferry from Kada Port, where nature unfolds just as in the anime. Kada Port, the gateway; Awashima Shrine, known for matchmaking and doll memorials; Kada Kasuga Shrine; and Kada Beach are all key locations. The fishing village of Saikazaki, with its beautiful sunsets, is another highlight. Riding the Nankai line nicknamed the "Kada Sakana Line" to its terminus at Wakayama-ko Station makes this island-and-town pilgrimage all the more memorable.
