Suzume travels across Japan closing doors that release disasters. From Kyushu to Tohoku.

Synopsis

"Suzume" is a feature-length animated film directed by Makoto Shinkai and produced by CoMix Wave Films, released in 2022. Suzume Iwato, a 17-year-old girl living in a quiet town in Kyushu, meets Souta Munakata, a young man searching for doors. Behind old, abandoned doors scattered across Japan, a disaster-bringing "worm" is about to emerge. Together with Souta, Suzume sets out on a journey to close doors from Kyushu to Shikoku, Kobe, Tokyo, and finally the Tohoku region. A road movie of growth and healing, layered with the memory of places and prayers for what has been lost.

Why visit the real-life locations

This film is a road movie across Japan, so the journey itself becomes the pilgrimage. Aburatsu in Nichinan, Miyazaki, where the story begins, charms with the nostalgic scenery of a port town. Beppu invites wanderlust with the steam of its hot-spring district. In Hyogo, the streets of Kobe-Sannomiya and the sea-spanning Akashi Kaikyo Bridge are highlights. In Tokyo, the sloping streets around Ochanomizu Station and the dignified red-brick Marunouchi South Exit of Tokyo Station appear. From Uwajima in Shikoku to the coastal areas of Iwate in Tohoku, the journey's end, you can trace the whole door-closing route.
