The Eccentric Family

有頂天家族

Year: 2013 Genre: Fantasy / 家族ドラマ Studio: P.A.WORKS

A fantastical family tale of tanuki, tengu, and humans in Kyoto. By Tomihiko Morimi. Shimogamo Shrine is a pilgrimage site.

Synopsis

P.A.WORKS adapted Tomihiko Morimi's 2007 novel in 2013, with a second season (*Uchoten Kazoku 2*) in 2017. In a Kyoto where humans, tengu, and tanuki coexist, the four Shimogamo brothers (Yasaburo, Yaichiro, Yajiro, Yashiro) honor their late father's will and live by the motto **"Live with fun in your heart"** — a Kyoto fantasy. The four seasons, festivals, and townscapes of Kyoto are drawn with extraordinary care.

Why visit the real-life locations

Kyoto, of course. The Shimogamo family's home, the World Heritage **Tadasu-no-Mori at Shimogamo Shrine**, is real. **Rokkakudo (Choho-ji)** is the abode of Benten-sama and the ikebana sanctuary; **Mt. Kurama** is the mountain of the tengu — every shrine and temple in Kyoto becomes a place where you swear tanuki and tengu must really live.
